Why Bangerbird won't reply for you
Since February 2026, X's API blocks automated replies to anyone who didn't mention you first, and in July 2026 X removed 42,000 accounts that used chatbots to reply. Replies to strangers are drafted for you and sent by you, from X's own app.

Because X prohibits it. AI reply bots need X's prior written approval, replies triggered by keyword searches are banned outright, and X's API only lets apps reply to people who mentioned you first. Replies you send yourself are also the ones that build real relationships.
It drafts replies to your mentions and sends each one after you approve it. Someone who mentions you has started the conversation, so replying through the API is allowed.
Reply opportunities from people who follow you, and whom you follow back, are listed first. In the ranking code X open-sourced, replies between mutual followers get a large boost, so those replies are more likely to be seen.
